Newfoundlands are large dogs with thick coats. They may be black (most common), or brown, grey, or white with black. The Newfoundland breed has a couple of cute nicknames: they may be called "Newfies" or "Newfs". Originally developed in Canada to work with fisherfolk, the breed makes a popular family pet as well as being suited to work in water rescue due to their webbed paws and swimming ability. A Newfoundland named Seaman accompanied explorer Meriwether Lewis during one of the Lewis and Clark Expeditions.
