Papillons are toy spaniels believed to be first developed in Italy. The name Papillon means "butterfly" in French -- the dogs are named for their butterfly-like ears and flowing ear fur. A Papillon with droopy ears is known as a Phalene, "moth" in French. Papillons are also known as Continental Toy Spaniels. These popular family pet dogs come in a variety of color schemes but always have long silky coats.
